Extreme Makeover - Home Edition - The Marrero Family - Urban Promise

November 11th, 2007

Unbelievable. Great stuff. I was actually there in Camden that week. I spoke at Urban Promise, to their summer teen jobs program, and while I was there I went over to see Bruce Main at the HQ. Bruce was overrun with people doing this show. I saw the house on day two, when it was just the frame. I never saw the finished product. It’s amazing. Those boys, so excited to have beds, man! I know a guy in my neighborhood, who came through Harambee, and his family is lived in pretty tough circumstances his whole life. He’s never had his own bedroom. He slept on the couch in the living room all through junior high and high school. It’s great to see the family truly get a new start and a great foundation. As I saw the father’s bedroom, I turned to Kafi and said, “I bet there are lots of good Christian single women out there who would love to be a mother to Marrero’s boys.”

That’s funny man, I said the exact same thing to my roommates about Mr. Marrero getting a good woman.

Molly and I watch that show every Sunday. Recorded it last night. I think I’m going to have all the El Acceso men watch it tomorrow.

I liked the show, but worried about the family. Could they afford the utilities and property taxes? I’ve read that extreme makeover houses make property taxes on surrounding houses go up. What does that do to an already impoverished community? Also, I hope the good reputation of the father can keep crime away. They showed how much there is to steal…but 5 teenage boys are a pretty good security system. I fear that it might have been more helpful in the long run to build them a modest home, but ultimately, it was a fabulous thing to see them getting those beds and a warm house!

Since you have a contact at Urban Promise, it would be cool to know how some of those issues are thought about there?

I have the same questions. I wondered if the neighbors would feel entitled to their property in a way… And whether they would be pressured to give their things away AND whether they would be able to hold on to the food, because they would share it with neighbors who didn’t have any.

I wondered the same thing on the Navajo Reservation show, though on that show the sun generated enough electricity that the family wouldn’t have to pay utilities.

I was surprised they didn’t offer the boys scholarships.

Yes, I am very curious as to how those things play out… And very very hopeful for the boys, the family, the father. I was thinking the exact same thing about Dad… A little privacy and a nice woman!
