Bret, thanks for your comment. I agree with your viewpoint on worship. I actually struggled a bit with how to use the word. We absolutely worship God when we do things to his glory, no matter our vocation or calling (athlete, educator, dishwasher, etc.) That's certainly how I've gone about my efforts in urban ministry. I think I just want to roll up as much "musical worship" time as I can. Like you, I'm not much of a "music" guy save for the fact that I listen to U2 over and over and over again. Hit me on email, tell me what's happening with AIA. Hope you can get a team to Harambee this summer/June. Good stuff happening there. I've connected with Derrick Braziel a few times up here in the Midwest - I met him when he was an AIA Urban Plunge volunteer at Harambee a few years back.

Rudy,
Thanks for your post. The further I get from my twenties, the more lessons I wish I’d learned in that decade. At the same time, I thought I knew it all then and likely wouldn’t have received those lessons anyway. As one who doesn’t “connect” with music (e.g., never listen to music in the car, volunteer in our church nursery on Fifth Sundays when the whole service is praise and worship of the musical variety), I’m wondering your thoughts about the Ten Thousand Hour Rule as it relates to a blown up view of worship? I would consider you a “world-class expert” in urban ministry. Clearly God has wired and gifted you to that end. No doubt you have put in your 10,000 hours serving, leading, and investing in kids, families, and adults from numerous urban communities. When I have heard you speak about those experiences as you lead others or, better yet, seen you in action, I feel like you are worshipping our Creator. Fortunately we don’t have to put in 10,000 hours to worship God, but it is a thing of beauty to watch people (who are uniquely gifted and maybe even world-class) use those talents as unto the Lord. The athlete who views his performance on the court as worshipping God, the educator who is called by God to teach, or even the restaurant worker who washes dishes, again - as unto the Lord, while having a running dialogue with God (a la Brother Lawrence) are examples I can relate better to in worship. Certainly the moment I play, teach, or wash in the flesh it ceases to be worship and I have my reward, but worshipping in Spirit and in truth allows great freedom for the Christian. Appreciate your quality posts – always good stuff.

Thanks for making a good point. May not be the advice you want to hear, but I find these three things to be invaluable. I personally am trying to expand my abilities in the grant writing arena. I mentioned your post in my blog on mentoring, furthertogether.blogspot.com/, as I am featuring job searching this month. http://furthertogether.blogspot.com/2011/02/sage-advice-from-seasoned-urban.html
