Pasadena Star-News: Shootout between cars reported:

PASADENA - Witnesses reported a rolling gun battle between two cars occurred in a residential neighborhood Tuesday, officials said.

The shooting was reported about 6:30 p.m. on Navarro Avenue at Howard Street, said Pasadena police Lt. Randell Taylor.

Between 10 and 15 shots were believed to have been fired in all, Taylor said, though no injuries were reported.

One of the cars involved fled the scene and has not been found, said Taylor. The other car, a Dodge Intrepid, was discovered near the scene where it had crashed into a parked vehicle, however there were no occupants inside, he said.

The Intrepid had bullet holes in it, Taylor added, and spent bullet casings were found at the scene.

No victims have been located, however, and police found no signs that anyone had been struck by the gunfire, said Taylor.

Incarnational Economic Research

From pages 18-19 of The Mystery of Capital:

To get an idea of just how difficult the migrant’s life was, my research team and I opened a small garment workshop on the outskirts of Lima, Peru. Our goal was to create a new and perfectly legal business. The team then began filling out the forms, standing in the lines, and making the bus trips into central Lima to get all the certifications required to operate, according to the letter of the law, a small business in Peru. They spent six hours a day at it and finally registered the business — 289 days later. Although the garment workshop was geared to operating with only one worker, the cost of legal registration was $1,231 — thirty-one times the monthly minimum wage. To obtain legal authorization to build a house on state-owned land took six years and eleven months, requiring 207 administrative steps in fifty-two government offices. To obtain a legal title for that piece of land took 728 steps. We also found that a private bus, jitney, or taxi driver who wanted to obtain official recognition of his route faced twenty-six months of red tape.

leopard! facebook valued at $15 billion? rudyPhone, nyet

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

• Man, I can’t wait for Leopard. This guy says he’s buying “everything Apple sells from now until forever.”

• Microsoft overpaid $240 million for 1.6% of Facebook, a valuation of $15 billion.

• No, I do not have an iPhone. If you read the post below again, you’ll see that the text in question is within a blockquote. It’s a quote of someone else’s stuff. Tells me I need to adjust the template to make the blockquotes more obvious.

Sync your inbox across devices with free IMAP

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

This is a big deal. Whatever you do in your email will get synced across all your email devices. If you open an email on your phone, read it, then delete, that action will be synced in your webmail and in your client (Entourage, Thunderbird, etc.) The example that the Gmail blog guy (David Murray) gives is this:

For example, I can:

– read an email in gmail, then
– move it to the Starred folder on my iPhone, then
– archive it by moving it to All Mail in Thunderbird, then
– see all of those changes on my Blackberry (or any of the above devices for that matter)

This new feature will solve A LOT of problems for me.

I dig Donnie McLurkin’s jams

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

The Hill: Obama pressured on “gay cure” preacher:

McClurkin is notorious among gay rights activists for fighting what he calls the “curse of homosexuality,” for saying sexual orientation is a choice, and for claiming that homosexuality can be “cured” by prayer.

Obama has drawn intense fire from gay activists and liberal bloggers in recent days for recruiting McClurkin and other gospel singers for a statewide tour of South Carolina beginning this week.

By threatening to weigh in strongly, Human Rights Campaign has elevated what began as a controversy in the blogosphere into a full-fledged dilemma for Obama’s campaign.

There is no quote by McLurkin are anyone representing his point of view.

iChat AV allows leukemia patient to participate in elementary school classes

At the Apple web site:

When Laub first underwent treatments for his illness, he experienced the typical grueling side effects. But equally devastating were his feelings of isolation from his friends and peers at school. Laub was required to remain at home during his chemotherapy, since his inability to fight infection meant that exposure to even garden-variety cold germs could prove a very serious health risk. Then Principal Patti Purcell and her staff did some brainstorming.

Lots of good info about what childhood leukemia patients go through in this article.

Protest and Invest: Countrywide Financial Corp., the biggest U.S. mortgage lender, will make it easier for customers to keep their homes by changing the terms on $16 billion of adjustable-rate mortgages.

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

This caught my eye:

“This is a big step,” said Bruce Marks, chief executive officer of Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America, after the company’s plan was announced.

“Countrywide sets the standard for servicing and how lending gets done.” The Boston-based advocacy group has demanded Countrywide make loan modifications easier. The company’s willingness to cut interest rates without penalty payments is a welcome move, Marks said.

Everyone protests. It’s important to know how to protest effectively. Marks demonstrates how connected individuals and corporations protest. The poor and lower-income folks often resort to street-actions (picket signs, etc.) in protest. To get what we want in our communities, we need to know how to protest effectively at many different levels, not just on the street.
